C1840 A European Steel Travelling Safe - with a hidden escutcheon and 2 origional keys this is a rare conversation piece!
During the 19th Century young aristocratic gentleman would travel around Europe on their “Grand Tour” they would buy works of art & have them shipped back to their country estates to impress their friends.
During this time gold was the common currency and you would need a travelling safe to keep your gold in!
If you press the rivet up - the panel reveals the 2 key holes, you just follow the instructions and the safe opens.
